Life on the plains is unforgiving. 1923: Start the new year by killing one — or two? — the main character and two more bullets.
An hour that begins with happy homecomings and trips to town turns bloody, courtesy of an angry shepherd. Spencer and Alexandra’s night fighting lions and hyenas in Africa feels like a day at a spa. Do you think so?
Read on for highlights from “The War Has Come Home.”
love between lions | | Let’s deal with the Kenyan part of the story first. Spencer and Alexandra are all set up in railroad camp. She wakes up in their tent with a very satisfied smile on her face as he gets her insides on the spotted hyena attacking the workers. After Alex changes, she and Spencer talk about the breathtakingly vast expanse of Africa. He mentions a place nearby where he saw a child’s footprints carved into the rock from very ancient times. “Show me,” she says.
So they drive to the location and pass practically the entire cast. The Lion King in the middle. When they arrive, they have a very cute conversation and ask if they can call him “Alex” instead of “Alexandra”. ’ he joked.
Spencer literally stops when she reveals she means the marriage proposal. She was kind of joking, but he suddenly got very serious and said, “I’ll ask right away.” Then get this delicious dialogue.
Alex| | I can’t hear your question.
spencer | | Marry me.
Alex | | it’s a statement
spencer | | This is a request.
Alex | | Your Americans are savages.
spencer | | Yes ma’am.
They kiss and are very much wrapped up in each other. so they can’t see the charging elephant until it approaches. Spencer manages to shoot the elephant dead, saving his life, but the car goes to toast. Spencer tells a dazed and bleeding Alex that it’s almost night and he can’t walk home, and needs to do the next best thing. Animals notice them before morning.
The problem is, as Spencer points out, an elephant carcass is the equivalent of “14 tons of dinner bells,” with both lions and hyenas coming in the dark to feast. Eventually, the lion notices Dutton and his lady, and begins a terrifying cycle of Spencer’s shooting, animal deaths, and Alex’s screaming. Meanwhile, a caravan of cars approaches — aided by the railroad camp. “Here I am!” Alex yells at their attention. The male helps hold the animal down long enough to let the pair down. “Will you be my fiancée?” Spencer asks Alex as they leave. “We’ll talk about it in the car,” she replies, sounding completely done.
On the drive home, she confesses that seeing death in front of her was kind of disgusting and she never wants to feel that way again. He says it was the only way he could feel everything…”until I met you” It’s been 48 hours since we met. Chill. She orders him to find a new job. They then talk about how they plan to have more sex when they return to the tent, but they can get an immediate head start in the backseat.
However, at the Clayton home, Banner returned and summoned some friends to come help. When his wife wondered what had left him bloody and her horse missing, he muttered.
The next day, the Duttons and their ranch hands clean up and take Buggy (and some horses) to Bow.ZeEman. Passing a storefront, they learn that the valley they live in will soon have electricity, and the women marvel at the washing machine and refrigerator that the salesman says will make their lives easier. You could write a book about how men ridicule the idea of ”convenience,” but electronics are mostly Women’s Life is easy, but we have a big sheep to shear in this episode. Please know it made me very huffed.
Jacob visits the sheriff and details what happened on the mountain. Law enforcement officers expressly forbid him from performing any more impromptu hangings, saying there is no need for a range war with Shepherd. “The range war has already started,” counters Jake. When he’s done, it’s too late for him to go home. So the Dutton family spends the night at the hotel…not realizing that the man across the street is recording their every move.
He found her undressed near the window and admitted that they were both excited and nervous before getting to work. However, it seems that the two have never taken care of each other’s crops before.
rough ride home | | The next morning, Carla wakes up to find Jake shaving in the bathroom. They talk about how it’s “all the rage right now” for women to shave their legs, leading to sharing her opinion that “greed is going to kill us all.” Married for 44 years, she still cares deeply for each other. (Side note: It was my favorite part when he said it was “pleasure and joy” to hear her babbling.)
When the Duttons leave town, Zane thinks a few cowboys should stay with him and Buggy, but Jacob lets the cowboys in front. So when the family suddenly finds themselves in a firefight as they move across an open lot, they have little backup. Elizabeth was hit first when the bullet ripped through her abdomen. Jack is next and has one on his shoulder. Jacob yells for everyone to get out of the wagon while he and John Sr. return fire.
Zane and the cowboys hear the fight and arrive in time to pick off most of the remaining shepherds, except for Banner, who drives them away. Kara runs over to Jake and finds him bleeding from several places. Then Emma approaches and Kara tries to stop her from seeing John Sr.’s dead body, but she can’t. That’s when Carla saw her one shepherd limping away from the clearing.
She takes a gun and chases him. We were back at the moment the series premiered. He asks her to think of her Heaven. She tries to kill him, but she has to reload.he also tries to reload to kill she, but she is faster. She cries after he dies.
Is Jacob a goner? | | The uninjured manage to bring the injured back to the ranch, where Jacob and Elizabeth are placed at the table while the injuries are evaluated. Jacob tells her it’s no use trying to save herself—”I won’t stop!” Kara wails, emphasizing the need to bring her nephew back from Africa. “Spencer has to go home now,” he whispers. “You take him home.”
Soon, doctors and nurses arrive and kick Carla out of the room so she can do her job. So the stunned matriarch gets out a piece of paper and a pen and writes her letter to Spencer. His brother is dead, his nephew is injured, and by the time he receives the note, his uncle will probably not be with us. I will,” she writes. “Any war you fight within yourself must wait. You must go home and fight this thing.”
