Long a part of Friar’s Club roasts and a staple of the big nightclub borscht belt, Freddie Roman has died at the age of 85. He had a heart attack this morning in Boynton Beach, Florida, his daughter said.
Roman had a long career in comedy and was a reliable old joke teller who worked in countless rooms in Las Vegas and other big cities.
He’s also been part of Comedy Central’s frequent roasts and has played several practical jokes on the likes of Jerry Stiller, Hugh Hefner, Drew Carey, Rob Reiner, and Chevy Chase.
Roman grew up in New York City and at age 15 was given the opportunity to host at his uncle and grandfather’s Crystal Springs Hotel in the Catskills.
He worked in the area for a while before leaving show business to work in his father’s shoe store. It didn’t last long and Roman returned to comedy.
Roman starred in a movie Welcome to Kutsher’s: The Last Catskills Resort (2012), last laugh (2006), bittersweet place (2005), christ in the city (2005), looking north (1998) and sweet lorraine (1987).
His TV appearances included guest shots Law and Order: Criminal Intent, tonight show, When red oaks on Amazon, etc.
He was also part of the successful Broadway show Catskills in 2003.
He is survived by his wife Ethel and daughter Judy Levin.
