Back in the Snyder Cut call, fans have been asking for Henry Cavill to reprise his role as Superman in the DC Extended Universe. It looks like they may finally get their wish granted.
An extended report also reveals that James Gunn is secretly working on another DC movie. THR WB Discover claims to have a “strong desire” to see Cavill don the red cape again. In fact, the project that will “essentially be Man of Steel 2” is reportedly looking for writers.
The project is one of several to feature Superman highlighted in the report, with everything from a possible Flash sequel to planned spin-offs based on Matt Reeves’ Rogues gallery of Batman. It also highlights the chaotic nature of the situation with WB Discovery trying to find its own version of Kevin Feige for the DCEU.
In the midst of what has been called a power vacuum at DC, with the impending resignation of DC president Walter Hamada, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is said to be trying to define the future of Superman. According to THR Johnson wants to make a “Black Adam vs Superman” featuring Cavill.
When asked if Black Adam would fight Superman, Johnson said, “Of course. That’s the gist of this.”
WARNING: Black Adam post-credits scene spoilers follow.
Black Adam won’t be released until the weekend, but Johnson has already revealed a post-credits stinger for the film, with Cavill making an appearance. Went to Heads Michael Deluca and Pam Abdi and got it done anyway.
In particular, Johnson appeared to question Cavill’s return to the role at San Diego Comic-Con in July, answering a question about whether Black Adam could defeat Superman in a fight. I was booed. Depending on who is playing Superman, I would say that.
Hamada defended a non-DCEU story featuring Black Superman by Ta-Nehisi Coates.
Cavill’s Superman last appeared in the round-panned Justice League before being resurrected by the so-called Snyder Cut. ‘s fate seems to have changed.
How WB Discovery ultimately progresses will depend on who fills the hole left by Hamada. According to THR, De Luca is responsible for green-lighting Joker 2, which could make his role in DC more permanent.
Black Adam, on the other hand, is slated for release on October 21st.
