home economics Wrapping up its disappointingly shortened 13-episode third season with an earthquake-themed finale on Wednesday, ABC hasn’t indicated if it plans to bring the hugely underrated sitcom back for season four. Hmm(When asked, an ABC rep told TVLine there’s no news to share yet about a possible fourth season. And Jon Aboud will get a temperature check on the show’s future.
TV Line | So… this episode Season or series Finale?
Michael Colton | we know that Season Finale. we are optimistic. We know the network is very happy with the show. And we have a very dedicated fan base. Just waiting for the right person to consider. it’s a process.but we planned come back There are many more stories to tell. we have hope
John Abboud | This episode is designed to be either the midpoint of a 22-episode season, the season finale, or the series finale. We made plans for all contingencies.
TV Lines | What explanation did ABC give for ordering only 13 episodes out of 22 this season?
Colton | It was basically a shelf space issue… [set] It has prime time hours and new shows like [Gina Rodriguez’s] not dead yet Coming…but that was disappointing. There are so many stories I want to tell. But all indications we’ve got are that the network is behind the show.
TV Line | Let’s talk about Season Finale.Connor was in a bit of an existential crisis after the earthquake. Mayor San Francisco?! Will it stick to a potential season 4?
Colton | | We have some fun ideas for how the Mayor thing would play out if we got season 4. | | I think that’s something you’ll enjoy in a few episodes. This is inspired by the idea that if people have a certain amount of wealth, they probably should…
Aboud | … Run all! [Laughs]
TV Line | About Denise and Sarah’s IVF Journey Why Didn’t You Get Sarah Pregnant? this With her portrayer Kaitlyn McGee already pregnant in real life, the season?
Colton | It would have been easy.It certainly would have saved us from having [to make] She held a pillow and put a fruit basket in front of her. Timing-wise, she had other stories she wanted to tell first. When a character gives birth to a baby, [becomes their main] The story; it’s hard to escape from it. And there were so many other things I wanted to play before I got to that point. And since we have a lesbian couple and it’s a very specific type of journey to get pregnant, the characters are based on my sister and her wife. tell me that trip.and we [accelerated the story to sync up with Caitlin’s pregnancy] We would have gone ahead and started season 3 with her already pregnant. [subsequently] We missed the chance to tell some of the stories we wanted to tell about IVF.of [a potential] Season 4 needs a runway to tell the story the way we want it to be told.
TV Line | Casey Wilson was a great addition this season as Harmony. Will she return full-time in Season 4?
Colton | | Anything is possible. It’s a little early to have such conversations. But she’s hilarious and ABC sitcom royalty. She added a whole new energy. We definitely want her back.
