The Dutton family suffered a devastating tragedy in Episode 3. 1923Jacob, Carla, John Sr., Jack, Emma and Liz are on their way back to the ranch when they are ambushed. They all hear a shot blaring in the distance, followed soon by another, hitting Liz in the stomach. Her white dress was immediately stained with blood.
Jacob yells for Buggy to get out of there. More shots are fired and Jack is hit in the arm. The carriage horses are frightened during the shootout and gallop with Liz still in her seat. Kara and Emma run to hide nearby, followed by Jacob and John Sr. Zane and the cowboys realize that something is wrong and go to the Duttons to help.
Jack chases Liz in a runaway buggy. He manages to control the horse and get Liz out. Suddenly the shooting stops. But the battle isn’t over yet. Men on horseback come from the woods and Jack decides to open fire on them. It starts another shootout. Jacob, Kara, and John Sr. fire from the spot, and Banner Clayton emerges from behind with an automatic rifle.
“Jacob Dutton, I’m a man who keeps his promises!” Banner yells at him before firing at Duttons. Jacob tells everyone to run away, but he doesn’t help much. Jacob and Jack Sr. were attacked multiple times. Carla and Emma can safely run next to Jack and Liz. Thankfully, Zane and the cowboys show up to help the Duttons.
Banner takes off in his car. Zane orders Jack to go get the buggy. Cara senses that something is wrong with Jacob and Jack Sr. Cara finds Jacob in a terrible condition, with blood coming out of his nose. He has been shot many times.
John Dutton Sr. is killed
When she saw John Sr. he was dead. He is shot directly in his eye. Emma yells at John Sr. and Carla begs her not to come. Emma doesn’t listen to her. Emma sees John Sr. dead and she walks away in shock.
In the distance, Carla spotted one of the Irish attackers. She shoots him once and he asks her to stop. She tells him that if she kills him, she will go to hell. In the same scene we saw in her episode of the pilot, Cara fires her gun, but it’s empty. They both rush to reload quickly, allowing Kara to kill him before he can shoot her.
Jacob and Liz rush back to Dutton’s house. They are laid out on the kitchen table. Jacob is in terrible shape. Cara confirms that Jacob’s wounds are serious. Jacob can ask Zayn if he got it all. Zayn reveals that Banner drove off, but he intends to dispatch the sheriff first.
“No,” Jacob says to Carla about his scars. Cara remains optimistic. She has no intention of quitting him. “Spencer has to go home to her now. Take him home,” he tells her.
Kara asks Spencer to come back
A doctor and nurse arrive to help Carla, along with Jacob and Liz. Emma still sits in a buggy with John Sr.’s body behind her as the doctor steps her foot into her bloody scene. He tells Kara to go away. Time is of the essence to save Jacob.
Carla goes outside and starts writing to Spencer, who is still in Africa. “Spencer, your brother has been killed,” she wrote. “By the time you receive this letter, I believe your uncle will have been killed. It has befallen your family.Whatever war you fight within yourself will have to wait.You have to go home and fight this thing.” New episode of 1923 sunday premiere Paramount+.
