REI is taking a strong stance on its inclusion in outdoor spaces in a way that other retailers catering to the plus-size market should be noting! It builds on the union’s existing standards. “Raising expectations in three key areas: fighting climate change, promoting inclusion in the outdoors, and managing chemicals.”
did you catch it? REI has set a new standard for how retail partners, brands sold in REI stores and websites, cater and address the plus-size market.
“REI wants to set an industry standard that works towards eliminating discrimination while expanding access to the outdoors.”
The 2023 Product Impact Standard is a first for the retail industry. This announcement marks the third evolution of the standard. First announced in 2018 and 2020 update.

As we have challenged and called for inclusion, representation and action in the plus-size fashion community, a position and change must occur. But who bears the brunt of the blame? REI owns it and holds itself accountable to brands to address this market.
“This standard will hold our cooperatives and our over 1,000 brand partners accountable when addressing the issues that matter most to our communities.” Chris Speyer, Vice President of Products, said: “The products we carry represent the greatest opportunity to support a better way to do business. We want our members and customers to know that the products they purchase at REI are helping build a better retail industry.” I think.”
Modeling agencies had to add plus-size models to their boards as we called on brands to include more visible plus-size models. We are asking brands to step up with concrete and actionable steps.
Brava.
Not only that, but these standards also include sustainability benchmarks that brands are expected to adhere to, such as setting emission targets in line with science.

We are here for the way REI is holding our partners accountable for these new expectations of greater equity across outdoor gear and apparel. What if I could see you adopting similar standards?
We hope that national retailers such as department stores and big box stores will adopt similar standards to really make a difference in the plus-size community.
Access to clothing – what is fashionable and functional should be the baseline, not the exception. It says a lot about that commitment.
What do you think? Are you as excited as we are? Which retailers would you like to see adopt these types of standards? Is this the beginning of a new normal?
