creator of “”crown‘ countered criticism of the upcoming new season, claiming they were ‘extremely sympathetic’ to the new monarch, Charles III.
The hit drama’s fifth season, which premieres on Netflix on November 9, tackles the divorce of then-Prince and Princess of Wales, starring Dominic West and Emma Debicki.
The show, which won an award for Outstanding Drama Series at last year’s Emmy Awards, received some criticism for its portrayal of the royal family.
Now the show’s creator, Peter Morgan, has responded with a comment given to variety“The 1990s were a difficult time for the royal family, and I’m pretty sure Prince Charles has painful memories of that time.
“But that doesn’t mean, in hindsight, history will be unfriendly to him or the monarchy. Shaw certainly isn’t. People are sometimes more understanding and compassionate than we might expect.”
West and Debicki are also speaking out in defense of the show’s producers.
Debicki, who will take over the role from Emma Corrin, told Variety:
“From the viewer’s perspective, the amount of investigation and care, conversation and dialogue is something you probably never realize. [with] Peter, I knew you entered this space where this was taken seriously. [in] A deeply caring way. That’s my experience with the show. ”
West, who replaced Josh O’Connor, explained that telling the story of difficult times was “a heavy, heavy responsibility, and one that I think we all take pretty seriously.”
The comments from Morgan and his cast came days after Netflix defended the show as “a dramatization of fiction.” Former British Prime Minister John Major has denounced his portrayal of his tenure as “harmful and malicious fiction” and a “barrel load”. Nonsense.
