The video features Ruban Neilson’s mother, Deedee Aipolani Neilson, and is described in a press release as “Hiro’s Kanaka Maori and Miss Aloha Hula 1973.” The release notes for the song read, “Told from the perspective of the Hawaiian who murdered Captain James Cook. Captain James Cook was heavily involved in the colonization of Polynesia and was a British man who attempted to kidnap Hawaii’s Chief Kalaniopu’u. An explorer who eventually met his death in Hawaii, as a result.” When Neilson was a child, his mother told him the story. Her song is a tribute to her.
