Mariah Carey may have needed help with the lyrics to “All I Want For Christmas” at this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
A viral TikTok shows the Grammy-winning artist singing in front of a teleprompter displaying lyrics to iconic Christmas tunes from decades ago.
“Yes, Mariah Carey uses a teleprompter for the lyrics of the most famous song at the Macy’s Day Parade.” User Sydney Ballina wrote in a video that has been viewed more than five million times on Sunday.
Although the video clearly shows the lyrics on screen, it’s unclear if Carey actually used an assistant to sing the holiday classic.
Carey has sung the song hundreds of times, and the practice of using the teleprompter seems to have become standard throughout the parade.
Many Mariah fans have defended Mariah in the comments, stating that the device is an essential tool for live recording.
“Television production employees here, across broadcasts have these running in scripts.
“People don’t understand how live television and performances work. If she has audio problems in her ears, she doesn’t know where she is in the song. There’s an echo.” said another.
A comment in defense of the Christmas Queen garnered tens of thousands of likes.
“These are called confidence monitors. A lot of singers and performers use them. The church where I work uses them,” said another.
Carey recently hey diva In an interview with W magazine.
“Yes, I play with it. Yes, some of it is real,” she said. “It can not be helped”
