Ike Balinholtz, Shim Liu and Eliza Schlesinger face off in first-ever semi-final competition Celebrity Jeopardy!, Sunday. The charity match was friendly and full of laughter, but there were some awkward moments, starting with questions about ethnicity.
The clue says, “October is the month of history for this Asian-American ethnic group that includes Olivia Rodrigo and Joe Coy.”
Ballinholtz replied, “What is a Filipino?”
Host Mayim Bialik gave Barinholtz a bounty, but his answer did not suit Liu.
“What does ‘What is a Filipino?’ mean?” Liu asked. “Ike, what does that mean?”
“Oh my god, that’s not what I meant,” Barinholtz stammered. “You have to answer in the form of a question.”
“What?” said Liu. He hinted that the determinant “what” should be replaced with “who”.
Liu turned to another contestant, Iliza Shlesinger, and said, “Did you hear him? I heard him.”
The most common social reaction from viewers was positive. That being said, Liu was playing for the charity Stop AAPI Hate. As an Asian, he said he was “deeply passionate” about eradicating racism.
Some AAPI-kei viewers appreciated Liu’s stance, even if it was in a comic way. He also managed to raise an additional $50,000 for charity, and got a few laughs along the way.
Laughter, because later in the game a celebrity was asked, “This battery mascot, which has come and gone since the late 1980s, has been enlisted in the Oxford English Dictionary to mean something or someone enduring.” continued.
“Who’s Duracell Rabbit?” comedian Eliza Schlesinger replied.
The correct answer was the Energizer Bunny. Schlesinger was so upset by her reaction that she never let it go.
“Duracell?” she cried. “Duracell Rabbit? Am I from Mars? Who in the last decade even said ‘Duracell’?”
And just like the Energizer Bunny, Shelesinger’s reaction continued…and went on…and kept going.
Shlesinger yelled before Mayim gave the next clue for “Brain Surgeon’s Terminology.” I need brain surgery! “
Celebrity Jeopardy! It airs on Sundays at 8pm on ABC.
