Ahead of the 2023 contest, Joey won the first-ever Qdoba Burrito Eating Contest in April by eating 14.5 burritos in 10 minutes. After winning in 2022, in July 2022, he broke the record for most Raising Cane chicken fingers in five minutes (44), and in August, he ate 32 servings of 24-ounce popcorn in eight minutes. Joey had many obstacles to overcome. He suffered a compound fracture of his right leg in December 2021, requiring two surgeries and nearly two weeks in the hospital.
