Ben Affleck says his newly built studio artist equityworking with Matt Damon, aims to be a film that is commercial yet smart, acknowledging popular tastes and “people will remember 20 years from now.”
He thinks/hopes his latest project, due out next year, fits the bill. Affleck directs and Damon stars in the true story of how the Jordan Brand was born. Artists Equity plans to release three projects next year, and in the future he plans to scale up to five or more projects a year.
“I don’t think there’s a difference between commercials and quality,” Affleck said during a wide-ranging Q&A with his investment partners at Artists Equity at The New York Times’ Dealbook Summit in New York. Jerry Cardinal of Red Bird Capital.

Quality takes time. “If you ask Reed Hastings…I think there’s a risk and I think they had a great strategy, but they were like, ‘How do you make 50 great movies?! There’s no board of sufficiency, it’s not enough — you can’t do it, it’s something that takes care and dedication and work and resists the assembly line process. A really talented and smart guy who likes…but it’s an impossible task.
“I understand that action movies have a larger audience than small dramas. , let’s wow the audience, let them care about it,” he added.
“The first wave of streaming was about volume,” Cardinale says. “The second wave is about quality.”

Affleck, Damon Cardinale, the founder and managing partner of Redbird, formally announced the launch of the artist-led studio earlier this month, partnering with filmmakers to strengthen their creative vision and create partnerships with filmmakers.
