Critic.Who Needs Them? According to Paul Stanley of kissnobody.
The legendary vocalist has weathered his share of critical drabbing since the day Kiss first took the stage nearly 50 years ago. “Critics want you to believe you need them,” he told UCR. “And you don’t. Tell someone what good food is.” I don’t need it. If it’s good, I’ll swallow it; if it’s bad, I’ll spit it out.”
For 20 years, he applies the same thought process to his art that he has used as a painter. “If it moves you and you’re inspired by it, then it’s valid,” he explains.
Stanley is black series His latest art work opens this weekend in Short Hills, New Jersey. Wentworth GalleryWe will be exhibiting in Florida in January and in Washington, DC in February.
In addition to Share updates Underway end of farewell tour As with Kiss’ future, Stanley spoke with UCR to discuss his art.
We are finally able to hold an art exhibition that has been postponed due to the pandemic. what are you excited about?
As you know, over the years people have had the opportunity to see my art change. I hate to say “style,” but Picasso was once asked…that’s God knows…it’s a rarefied air, so I’m not comparing myself. said, “I think I’m a styleless painter.” I love the idea that you are on this endless journey. you are always on the move Even if you’re not moving forward, you’re always in motion. [Laughs] It’s really nice to go to an exhibition and see the range of what you’ve done.
In the first place, I couldn’t even imagine doing an art show. I couldn’t imagine having so much art actually installed in a gallery. Excited. I love the idea that people’s boundaries and threats to art, theater and music could be broken down. People who say you need an education to have an opinion are paid to make you believe it.
How far back do some of these works go?
Probably 20 years. I think almost all of the originals from the first 18 years or so have been spoken. But there is also something called a giclee, which is a high-resolution scan done on canvas. You can also use it in the state that I overcoated it. There really is something for everyone. I believe that art is a reflection of who you are, whether you live in a house, an apartment, or a car.

how did you develop black series What art work have you made?
In most cases, the canvas is usually primed with white or light colored paint or gesso. This makes the light appear to radiate from underneath the paint. I started experimenting with painting on a black canvas. The images and colors seem to emerge out of the dark. I find it more powerful and much moodier. Most of the time I have been painting on a black canvas.
What do you like to do on the street between concerts? Is there anything artistic you can do?
I love doing nothing. Because our schedule is considerably more intense than many other bands. Certainly, frankly, our height or age band. When a band hears that he has two shows a week, if I told him he had two shows a week, I would be at home. On my days off, unless there are some great exhibits around that I want to see, I mostly either go to great restaurants or stay in my room.
Talking about food, how did you get started cooking? I often look at your social media posts and get hungry when you share what you’ve made.
I started cooking probably 20 years ago when I got divorced.it was important to me [my son] Evan knew at the time that everything was fine and we were fine. he started cooking. He needed breakfast, he needed dinner. That’s when I started. I don’t consider myself a chef – I am a cook – there is a big difference. Tell them. Still, it doesn’t take long to combine the flavors. It doesn’t have to be hard to start. Good food, the great thing about Italian food is that you respect the ingredients and let them do the talking. That’s why we make pasta and pizza. Just combine great flavors. It’s hard to go wrong.
